Review by Marie Moore Lyles
If you are seeking success and searching for your purpose in life, this is the book for you.
"Dear Success Seekers," written by Dr. Michele Wise Wright, was recently published by Atria Books (a Division of Simon and Schuster, Inc. as of April 2009) at a time of financial crisis during which many are seeking employment or entrepreneurship.
Wright, a Tuskegee native, 1984 graduate of Tuskegee Institute High School, and 1990 graduate of Tuskegee University in electrical engineering, is the author of this comprehensive collection of letters from women with life experience-induced wisdom.
After leaving Tuskegee, Wright earned a Masters Degree in industrial engineering/engineering management from the University Tennessee Space Institute and a Ph.D. in public policy with specialization in health and leadership policy from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
She has become a top-performing and multiple national/international award-winning corporate leader in fields including: education and engineering; food, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sales; and project, team and total quality management.
With this background, Wright has researched the lives of 85 successful women to organize this easily-read book.
The experiences of each contributing correspondent are unique. Some have earned celebrity status in sports, the arts and entertainment. Some are pioneers in business, education or industry. Others are "sheros" in human and civil rights. Still others are faith leaders or experienced mothers. All bring their definition of success. Each reader can find inspirational jewels that will guide the success-seeker in reaching her/his own potential.
The book features a foreword by Dr. Camille Cosby and an exclusive interview with Gayle King, editor-at-large of "0" Magazine.
There are four women living in Tuskegee who have penned their wisdom for success in Wright’s book:
•Ms. Barbara Danner -- president and founder, Macon County Fine Arts Manifesto, Inc. and national public relations director, Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute of Self-Development
•Mrs. Mildred Carter -- pioneer licensed aviator and wife of Col. Eugene Carter of the famed Tuskegee Airmen
•Mrs. Lille Armstrong Thomas -- the first secretary to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and former office manager, Southern Christian Leadership Conference
•Mrs. Frankie Berry Wise -- award-winning professional homemaker/cook and animal rights activist who is also the mother of Dr. Wright.
Although the majority of letters are written by African-American women, there are many women of Asian, European, Native-American, and Hispanic backgrounds. This book appeals from a multicultural prospective.
Celebrities included, to name a few, are Shirley Caesar, Ruby Dee, Mae C. Jemison, Patti LaBelle, Rosa Parks, and Billie Jean King.
“Dear Success Seeker” can be purchased at Follett Campus Bookstore on the Tuskegee University Campus or by going online to www.dearsuccessseeker.com or www.amazon.com.
